Founded in 1916, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is an internationally reputed central university and an officially designated Institute of Eminence. It stands as one of the largest residential academic institutions in Asia.
Created under the Parliamentary BHU Act of 1915 by nationalist leaders Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, Dr. Annie Besant, and Maharaja Rameshwar Singh Bahadur, BHU played a pioneering role in the freedom struggle and modern higher education in India.
The university houses 6 specialized institutes (including IIT-BHU and IMS-BHU), 16 faculties, and multi-disciplinary centers spanning humanities, sciences, medicine, engineering, fine arts, agriculture, and Vedic studies across two campuses (Varanasi and Barkachha).
